Schools - admissions - appeals: Outline

There are different types of mainstream schools maintained by Southend Borough Council as the Local Education Authority:

  • Community Schools - The Council is responsible for setting the admissions criteria, admitting pupils and arranging admission appeals where applications for a place have to be refused.
  • Foundation and Voluntary Aided schools - the individual governing body of the school concerned is responsible for setting the admissions criteria, admitting pupils and arranging admission appeals where applications for a place have to be refused.

The Council co-ordinates the admission arrangements into Reception, year 3 and year 7 for all schools in the Borough.
