Council services
Roads - maintenance: Outline
We are responsible for maintaining footways, roads and any defects which the public identify including,
- potholes
- trips hazards
- obstructions on the pavement
The public highway is the area between the boundary of premises on either side of the street and includes, footways, verges, shrubberies, cycleways, carriageways (road), central reservations, roundabouts and features such as street lighting, gullies, drainage channels, signs, guard railings etc... within this area.
Road Adoptions
The Council maintains a register of all roads for which it has a responsibility to maintain. When a new road is built as part of an estate, the county council would adopt the road for maintenance once it is satisfied that it is in good condition.
There are still a small proportion of roads in the Borough that are not maintainable by the Council.
Highways Boundary Enquiries
Highway boundary enquiries are undertaken to determine the extent of publicly maintainable highway at a specific location. These are generally undertaken as part of a 'search' when purchasing a property and when improvements to the highway are required.
