Housing Improvements - Private Rented Sector: Outline
The Council has a range of powers to assist tenants deal with disrepair and hazards in privately rented properties, including houses in multiple occupation (HMOs). The Council can formally require works by statutory notice, principally under the Housing Act 2004.
Tenants should first report disrepair or other hazards to the managing agent or landlord and give them a reasonable time to carry out works before contacting the Council for help.
