Children's Work Permits - Licence directory

Description

If a young person is:

  • aged 13 or over
  • of compulsory school age
  • and in employment (paid or unpaid), they must have a work permit (even if they are working for their parents)

Children under the age of 13 are not allowed to work. Important things to remember:

  • your child's employer is responsible for his/her health, safety and welfare when he/she is at work and must offer protective clothing where needed
  • the employer must also look at any risks which may affect your child in their job. Permitted hours of work
  • your child must not work before 7am or after 7pm
  • your child can only work out of school hours which may include 1 hour before school
  • your child is not allowed to work more than 12 hours a week during term time

13 to 14 years

  • on school days they can work for up to 2 hours
  • on Saturdays they can work for up to 5 hours
  • on Sundays they can work up to 2 hours
  • during School holidays they can work up to 5 hours a day
  • the maximum hours they can work in any week is 25 hours

15 to 16 years

  • on school days they can work for up to 2 hours
  • on Saturdays they can work for up to 8 hours
  • on Sundays they can work up to 2 hours
  • during School holidays they can work up to 8 hours a day
  • the maximum hours they can work in any week is 35 hours
