Council services
Vehicles - abandoned - reporting and procedures: Outline
The Council operates a service to investigate alleged abandoned vehicles and, if appropriate, to arrange for their removal and disposal.
This process is carried out under the authority of the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978.
A vehicle that is deemed to be abandoned, depending on circumstances, will be issued with a notice giving the owner a specific time period in which to claim ownership. Following that period, the vehicle will be removed to storage for subsequent disposal.
We have a statutory duty to remove vehicles on the public highway or on Council-owned land. To remove abandoned vehicles on privately owned land, we need permission from the landowner and there may be a charge.
