Statistics - census information: Outline
The latest Census took place on 29th April 2001. The Population of Southend-on-Sea on Census Day was 160,256 compared to 157,517 on Census Day in 1991.
The Census takes place every 10 years and seeks to provide a count of all people and households. It is the most complete source of information about the population. The Census counts the number of people living in each city, town and country area, and in their constituent parts. It tells us something about each area and its population, including the state of their health and type of housing they live in.
The information from the Census assists central and local Government, health authorities and many other organisations to target future resources and to plan their provision for housing, education, health, transport and leisure services more effectively.
A range of population, Census and other socio-economic data, including Census output figures, population estimates and forecasts, and unemployment information is available for the Borough and individual Wards.
