Council Tax Reliefs

Penalties

Please note: applying for a discount or exemption that you are not entitled to, or failing to notify the Council within 21 days of any change in circumstance that effects your entitlement will result in a penalty of up to £280 being issued.

Please see our Council Tax Penalties page for further information on penalties.

Disabled Relief

You may qualify for a reduction of one Council Tax valuation band, or in the case of properties already in Band A, a further reduction of 1/9th of the Band D charge, if the property has been adapted in one of the following ways to meet the needs of someone living in the property as their sole or main address.

  • an extra room is used mainly to meet the essential needs of the disabled person (e.g. having a room set aside for a dialysis machine, breathing apparatus or physiotherapy equipment, or an additional downstairs bedroom)
  • an additional kitchen or bathroom has been added to meet the needs of the disabled resident
  • the property has been adapted to allow wheelchair access and use of a wheelchair inside the property

Whatever your income or savings, you may qualify if you meet the above requirements. To apply you will need to go to MySouthend to complete the Disabled Banding Reduction online form

In some cases a home visit may be needed.
