Planning - conservation advice: Outline
Listed Buildings
Southend has a wide range of historic buildings. The most important are included by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in the statutory list of "buildings of special architectural or historic interest".
Southend has about 150 of these "Listed Buildings" these also have local historic interest or are important features of the townscape. The Council has made a Local List of approximately 150 buildings which we want to protect, although there are no special powers to do so. Development which needs planning permission will normally only be allowed if it respects the building's character.
