School Attendance and Child Employment Service
The role of the School Attendance and Child Employment Service (SACES) is to work with parents to enable them to meet their legal responsibility to ensure their child or children attend school regularly. School Attendance Officers attempt to support parents/carers and pupils and try to resolve any issues preventing the child from accessing a regular education. If, however parents/carers fail to engage with this support, and attendance fails to reach a satisfactory level, the Attendance Officer may use legal sanctions to try to secure an improvement in the child's attendance, such as Fixed Penalty Notices or prosecutions in the Magistrates Court under Section 444 of the Education Act 1996.
The SACES is also responsible for ensuring that children engaged in part-time employment, or who take part in public performances, are doing so safely and within the law.
