Planning - conservation areas: Outline

Conservation Areas are "areas of special architectural or historic interest". The Council has a duty to preserve and enhance these areas. In some cases additional planning controls apply and permission is normally only given if proposed development preserves or enhances its character. Demolition of buildings and work to trees are also controlled. There are 14 Conservation Areas in Southend Borough.

Conservation Grants

The only conservation grant scheme operating at the moment is the Window Grant Scheme for the repair and reinstatement of traditional windows in the Borough's Conservation Areas.
