Industry Champions

The aim of the Industry Champions project is to provide an intermediary service for schools and local Skills Projects and businesses to increase the amount of skills/careers development activity led or influenced by local employers.

The aim is to better prepare people of the world of work, inspire them to think about industries that they may not have considered before and to provide information about specific industries that operate in and around Southend.

A Better Start Southend: Work Skills Project

Since its inception in 2015, the Work Skills project has been a key cog in A Better Start Southend, with a focus on skills, enterprise, employment and wider economic development and with the aim of inspiring and exciting parents of children under 4 in the A Better Start Southend wards. The project shows to parents that the world of work can be both exciting and accommodating to them and the needs of their young children.

The project has 4 key areas:

  • Learning for Mum and Dad
  • Introduction 2 Enterprise Workshops
  • Enhanced Careers Advice and Industry Visits
  • 60 Minute Mentor Inspirational Talks

The 60 Minute Mentor South Essex (60MMSE)

The 60MMSE programme is an inspiring mentoring services available to selected schools and students across south Essex (Basildon, Thurrock, Rochford, Castle Point and Southend-on-Sea). The project provides vital support and guidance for young people in Year 8, specifcally those at risk of disengagement.  

Matching young people to an inspirational role model can have many postitive impacts including:

  • Increased confidence
  • Increased engagement in school
  • Increased aspirations and motivation

Enterprise Adviser Network

The Enterprise Adviser Network is a national project that has been tailored locally to meet the needs to Southend’s young people, businesses and schools. It has been set up to inspire and prepare young people for the world of work.

Our network of Enterprise Advisers is made up of volunteers from businesses and other employers, both large and small. They work directly with the leadership of schools and colleges to develop effective employer engagement programmes. Schools, colleges and Enterprise Advisers are supported by a full time Enterprise Coordinator.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is developing Ambition Southend, a Skills and Labour Market Strategy for Southend-on-Sea. The strategy has completed it's public consultation period and further information will be released soon.

On the 4th July 2018, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council are holding the first Careers and Skills Fairs aimed at young people and parents/carers, job seekers and careers changers.
