National Census 2011
On 16th July 2012 the Office for National statistics (ONS) released the 2011 population estimates for Southend-on-Sea. This showed the estimated population of the borough to be 173,600 residents and an estimated 74,700 households. The estimated population for Southend has grown by 13,343 since the 2001 census, an increase of 8.3 per cent.
The population in England and Wales was 56.1 million, 53.0 million in England and 3.1 million in Wales. The population of England and Wales grew by 3.7 million in the 10 years since the last census, rising from 52.4 million in 2001, an increase of 7.1 per cent. This was the largest growth in the population in England and Wales in any 10-year period since census taking began, in 1801.
More detailed figures are due to be released on a rolling programme between November 2012 and October 2013.
