Let Southend give you an Advantage …
What is it?
The Southend-on-Sea Advantage Card Scheme aims to provide significantly reduced rates for a range of services to residents living within the Borough of Southend. Further discounts are available to concessionary groups.
The benefits attached to the Advantage Card will be continually improved, to provide on-going value for money to our residents.
How do I benefit?
- Reduced prices for activities (up to 10% off the standard rate of selected activities at varying times).
- Free equipment hire for concessionary groups.
- Use your Advantage Card as a deposit for equipment (including racquet hire).
- Free entry as a spectator.
- Discounts at a variety of shops and organisations, as they join the scheme.
- Discounted rates for 'The Biz' school holiday activities.
- Access to special promotions, additional discounts for certain special events.
N.B. Holders of memberships at any of the Council-run leisure centres will not get any further discounts with an Advantage Card.
Concessionary Groups
To improve access to leisure facilities concessionary groups can obtain up to 50% off the non-member standard rate at certain times.
Why should I have an Advantage Card?
The annual cost of the Card will be quickly recovered on savings from standard charges as well as discounts obtained from additional outlets that will be joining the scheme. Advantage Card Holders will receive details of special offers, promotions and prize draws.
Sorry - but this scheme is only open to residents of the Borough of Southend i.e. people who pay their Council Tax to Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.

Creating Leisure Card
The Creating Leisure Card is available to residents of the Borough of Southend who are under 17, 60+ or full-time students. The card can be used at the Borough's five leisure centres ONLY, for a discount on 'pay as you go' sessions in the fitness suite between the hours of 7am-5pm on the standard price. Current Leisure Centre Fees and Charges showing discount for Creating Leisure Card Holders are attached to this webpage.
Type of Cards
Here is an easy check list for each option available in the Advantage and Creating Leisure Card schemes. Look at the list to find the card you are applying for and check that you have everything you need.
- A - Resident Adult (£5.00) - Up to 10% off
- B - Resident under 17, 60+, student (£3.00) - Up to 10% off
- C - Resident Adult Low Income (£1.00) - Up to 50% off
- D - Resident under 17, 60+, student Low Income (£1.00) - Up to 50% off
- Family - 1 Adult, all children (£9.00) - Up to 10% off
- Family - 2 Adult, all children (£12.00) - Up to 10% off
- Creating Leisure Card (£1.00) - Up to 50% off
How do I apply for an Advantage or Creating Leisure Card?
- Completed signed application form (young people under the age of 17 will need the signature of their parent or guardian. Family Cards should have one application per member covered.
- Payment - in person by cash, cheque, credit card and postal order (made payable to Southend Borough Council.
- Proof of residential status (i.e. Recent proof of address within Southend Borough area). We accept any of the following: Driving Licence; Rent Book; Medical Card; Council Tax Bill or Book; Gas/Electric/Phone Bill; Bank Statement; PO Saving Book; Membership Card; Child Benefit Book; Benefit Order Book/Giro; Typed letter from official body.
- Passport-sized photograph: alternatively your picture can be taken at the Civic Centre.
- Proof of Age. We accept: Driving Licence; Passport; Birth Certificate.
- Recent proof of receipt of: Jobseekers Allowance (ES40); Housing Benefit; Working Tax Credit; Income Support; Council Tax Benefit; Severe Disablement Allowance; Disability Working/Living Allowance; Invalid Care Allowance; Guarantee Credit. We also accept correspondence from Social Services if your children are looked after by Southend Borough Council by fostering or in children's homes.
- Proof of Student status (over 16 in full-time education) such as a Student Union Card or letter from Tutor.
Conditions of Use
- The Card must be produced on every occasion to obtain reduced charged.
- The Card is non-transferable and remains the property of Southend Borough Council. It may only be used by the person who has been issued with the Advantage/Creating Leisure Card.
- Cards must be renewed every twelve months and may not be used after the expiry date.
- Only residents living within the Borough of Southend i.e. residencies which appear on the Southend Borough Council Tax Register, may purchase the Advantage/Creating Leisure Card (for children in care apply via Social Services).
- All fees and charges will be determined by Southend Borough Council, who reserve the right to amend charges and conditions of use without prior notice.
- The giving of incorrect information with the intent of defrauding the Council, improper use or unacceptable behaviour, will result in forfeiture and any other appropriate action considered necessary.
- Damaged or defaced Cards shall not be used, and Card holders may be requested to purchase a replacement Card. A charge of £1 for all replacement Cards will be made.
- If Card holders participate with non-Card holders the standard rate will apply except where individual pricing is in place.
- The administration of this scheme is computerised and, therefore, registered with the Data Protection Register in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1984, revision 1998.

Download and print off the application form (from the Downloadable Forms section of this web page) and together with copies of your proof of identity/benefit etc. either post them or take them in person to:

Remember, each person who wishes to have an Advantage Card must have a form filled in for them, even if you are applying for a Family Card. So, 2 adults and 5 children equals 7 forms!
Cheques and postal orders should be made payable to Southend Borough Council.
Alternatively, you can Apply Online using our online Creating Leisure and Advantage Card Application eForm - payment will be taken using your debit or credit card. You will still need to provide proof of residence within the Borough and benefits (if applicable) but these can be provide when you come into the Civic Centre to pick up your card.
Note: All applications by post must have a passport-sized photograph attached.
Applications in person will have a digital picture taken at the time of issue.
