Q: EHE - Employing a private tutor as part of Elective Home Education

Answer:

Some parents feel unable to cater for their child's entire teaching and want to hire a private tutor for some subjects, or others may book a tutor for a child's entire home learning. It's best to shop around as many tuition agencies offer home education packages with tutors who are especially used to home schooling. These may offer online tutoring as well as one to one private tutoring, with aims such as helping students to better understanding a particular subject, pass an exam or improve intellectual capacity. Ideally you might find a tutor through personal recommendation.  However, failing this, there are a number of agencies offering the services of tutors.  Advertisements for these can be found in most local newspapers.  You must insist on CRB check and keep the tutor and your child visible in your home.  References which can be checked are important and a compulsory part of selection.

Southend Local Authority cannot recommend particular tutors, as to do so would imply approval.  If employing a private tutor, it is vital to protect your child's welfare and ensure their progress by satisfying yourself the tutor is a fit person to be with your child, and has the appropriate qualifications for the subject and level for which you are employing them.  You must ensure that all measures have been taken and that your child will be safe.
