The Keen Recycler
The Keen Recycler - Your Say on Recycling
Here are what some of our residents say about recycling:
"I am a keen recycler because I believe recycling is a good thing, it saves digging up the planet for new raw materials, saves energy, and reduces emissions, hence protecting the environment and helping to save the planet."
"I don't normally make New Year's resolutions but this year I have decided that I will make more effort to reduce the amount of waste I produce by purchasing products with less packaging and recycling as much of the packaging that I do get."
"I try not to take things to the Household Waste Recycling Centres, preferring not to generate waste in the first place. If I must go I always ensure I have a car full and separate any recyclable materials before I go to make it easier to put them in the right containers. Reducing my visits cuts down on congestion, stops pollution and saves me time!"
"I was surprised to find my pink sack left this week. As a keen recycler I could not understand it, but once I checked the bag I found polystyrene had accidentally been placed in. I removed the contaminant and put the material out in a new bag for the following week when it was collected as usual. Just goes to prove they check whether there are non-recyclable materials in the sacks!"
"My neighbour is always tinkering with his car, but I must say he is very good at ensuring that any old engine oil he produces goes to the Household Waste Recycling Centres for recycling. He knows it is an awful pollutant if it accidentally gets into drains and water courses."
"It was common practice in my day to use real nappies instead of disposable and having recently become a grandparent and being a keen recycler I feel that this practice should continue. Using real nappies has not only saved my family money but also prevented lots of waste going to landfill."
"A friend recently told me about the web site http://www.freecycle.org/ where you can offer things you do not want anymore free to others. It's worth having a look. I guess there are other sites like this."
"I try to visit Farmers Markets when I can to purchase locally produced, seasonal Fruit and Vegetables. As well as great products I like the fact that they usually come with minimal packaging and are produced in the region."
"I insist companies selling me new electrical appliances take the old ones away. If they refuse or want to charge me I shop around for another retailer. I'm sure if they want my business they will waive any charge. If the appliance is so old no one will take it I ensure it goes to the electrical container at the Household Waste Recycling Centre where it will be recycled."
"I heard my neighbour complaining about the autumn leaves from the street trees falling into his garden. But I collect all the leaves I can, sweeping them from my path and drive. I collect them in a heap and once they have composted into Leafmould I use it around plants like azaleas and camellias."
