Taxi Ranks and Stands

Councils are responsible for the provision of designated taxi ranks at key areas within the authority boundaries. Taxi ranks are sited so that passengers board or alight from the taxi onto the footway on the nearside of the vehicle. Ideally, taxi ranks should be located adjacent to railway, bus and coach stations, and all major attractions, such as retail areas, places of employment and entertainment/leisure centres.

The purpose of the taxi ranks is to provide the public with a set location where they can hire a licensed taxi. Southend has 28 ranks all over the Borough excluding the ones at Railway Stations and the Hospital and these are located in the following areas:

Vehicles permitted to wait

The only vehicle that is permitted to wait on a Southend taxi rank is a taxi licensed by Southend Borough Council which is plying for hire, or a bus where the bus stop is obstructed.
