Cycling

We have a vision to give every person in Southend the opportunity and desire to cycle - encouraging them to become Southend's cycling future. Cycling is an ideal form of transport for undertaking short journeys, and to serve to link together modes of transport for longer journeys.

By working with schools, colleges, the University, local clubs and community groups, employers, other transport providers and individual users, we can offer cycle training and solutions to other cycling barriers.

In 2008, Southend celebrated it's win of a 3.2 million match funded grant towards becoming one of Britain's top cycling demonstration towns. This has seen the development of cycle routes, the moveeasy network and Cycle Southend. Cycle Southend's role is to encourage cycling across the wider community targeting groups and individuals. The team's remit broadly covers the following and much more:

  • Encouraging Adults to participate in Cycle Training,
  • Working with employers, to overcome cycling barriers and persuade employees to cycle to work,
  • Giving people access to low-priced cycles through Sustainable Motion CIC, recycling bicycles with the help of volunteers, that are then sold at low cost back to the community,
  • Providing cycle maps and other relevant information through various forms of media,
  • Creating cycling events and attend other events promoting Cycle Southend,
  • Working in partnership with Sustrans,
  • Ensuring promotion for cycling infrastructure projects,
  • Links with clubs and other cycling events via our website,
  • Cycling advice and tips.
