Overseas Trained Teachers (OTTs)

The Overseas Trained Teacher Programme (OTTP)

This is very similar to the GTP. This is a work based route involving working within a school as an unqualified teacher. To qualify for the OTTP a teacher must:

  • Be a qualified teacher overseas
  • Have the equivalent to a UK first degree. If the qualifications are not equivalent to a full UK first degree then the teacher must undertake a conversion course to obtain the necessary points to begin the OTTP.
  • Working as a teacher in a school
  • Be accepted by a designated recommending body (DRB). DRBs are partnerships involving schools, accredited ITT providers and LAs and they take responsibility for designing and delivering the OTTP training programme.
  • Have qualifications equivalent to GCSEs grade C or above in English and Mathematics. If teaching across key stages 2 and 3 a GCSE grade C or above, or equivalent, in Science is also required.

Southend LA are able to assist with International Qualification Comparisons. Using the database supplied by UK National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC), we can support you in finding out whether your qualifications are equivalent to UK GCSEs and UK bachelor degree level.

The OTT programme can be assessment only if a teacher has sufficient experience and has put together an excellent portfolio of evidence. The OTTP can therefore run for as little as 2 or 3 weeks, or up to one academic year. The OTTP is designed to be adapted to meet individual needs.
