Waste Minimisation

The Waste Hierarchy

Waste minimisation

Minimising the amount of waste which is produced in the first instance lies at the top of the 'waste hierarchy'- where waste prevention is followed by reuse, recycling/composting, energy recovery and finally disposal at the bottom as the least desirable option.

Disposal of waste to landfill has a number of negative environmental impacts, so minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill clearly needs to be the priority to reduce the impact that we have on our environment.

The pages in this section cover the different areas of waste minimisation which we can all be involved in to help to reduce our impact on our environment- from reducing junk mail by signing up to the Mailing Preference Service to home composting, or may be simply buying loose fruit and vegetables, we can all do something every day which will help to make a difference.
