Changes to Library Services

Southend libraries have left Essex Library Service. How does this affect me?

On Monday 26 March 2018, Southend Libraries officially left Essex Library Service and joined a larger consortium of libraries called the South East Libraries Management System (SELMS).

This move gives Southend library members access to a greater range of books and other library resources than ever, with lower fees for inter-library loans.

Here are the main changes you need to be aware of:

If your home library is in Southend:

  • You will remain a member of Southend Library Service under SELMS
  • You can now access books and resources from other SELMS library members using your existing library card
  • You can no longer borrow books or other library resources from libraries in Essex or Thurrock unless you take out a separate library membership with Essex Library Service
  • You can be a member of both library services if you wish
  • If you borrow materials from a Southend library, they must be returned to a library in Southend (or other SELMS member library). You can no longer borrow a book from Southend and return it to a library in Essex or Thurrock, or vice versa
  • You can continue to use your current library card. However, when it comes up for renewal, it will be replaced with a new library card displaying both the Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and SELMS logos
  • Charges for inter-library loans will reduce.

If your home library is in Essex or Thurrock:

  • You will remain a member of Essex Library Service
  • You can no longer borrow books or other library resources from Libraries in Southend unless you take out a separate library membership with Southend Library Service
  • You can be a member of both library services if you wish
  • If you borrow materials from an Essex library, they must be returned to a library in Essex or Thurrock. You can no longer borrow a book from Rochford, for example, and return it to a library in Southend, or vice versa
