Healthy Schools Southend-on-Sea

Our aim is simple: to support schools throughout Southend-on-Sea to improve health and wellbeing for pupils, staff, parents and carers in the wider school community.
 
Involvement in the Southend Healthy Schools Programme helps
  • to support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours; 
  • to help to raise pupil achievement; 
  • to help to reduce health inequalities; 
  • to help promote social inclusion. 

Healthy Schools Status 

The schools in Southend-on-Sea can work to gain Healthy School status by using our school specific self-evaluation tool, to help them demonstrate how they improve school life through health and wellbeing work. Completing the evaluation tool will highlight areas on which to focus. Specific areas covered are PSHE, Healthy Eating, Physical Activity and Emotional Health and Wellbeing. Once Healthy School Status has been achieved it will be revalidated every two years.

To extend and strengthen Healthy School’s work, schools can move on to achieve the following:

Can help schools
  • identify and address local health priorities
  • ensure that health and wellbeing are key areas of school improvement
  • prioritise the most disadvantaged children and young people
  • support schools to encourage children and young people to embrace healthier behaviour
  • build on the success of Healthy Schools
  • identify and tackle key health priorities
  • work closely with parents, carers and the wider community to bring about healthier behaviours
  • Enhanced Healthy Schools can help schools take specific health needs and deliver an effective, evidence-based piece of work, making a real, measurable difference to the health and the wellbeing of children and young people.

Enhanced Healthy School Story

Celebrate your considerable achievements by writing the school story of your journey to Enhanced Healthy Schools status and the impact it has had on the pupils in your school. There is an annual celebration of schools that have achieved Enhanced Healthy School Status.
