You can use your ticket at any of the Southend libraries, and also at any Essex or Thurrock library. So, if you live in Southend but work in Chelmsford you can use your ticket there as well.
This allows us to offer a wide range of resources and services through a network of libraries including specialist collections and services just for children. We also offer trained staff who can help you find the information you need.
Once you are a member, you can borrow up to 14 items. Most items are checked out for a period of three weeks but many can be renewed at any library either by telephone or in person - as long as nobody else wants them!
Join in person at a Library:
If you join in a library and have proof of address with you, we will issue you with your ELAN ticket immediately and you can borrow up to 14 items. If you don't have proof of address, you can borrow 7 items immediately and we will post your ticket to you. If you are aged under 16, we will also write to your parent or guardian telling them that you have joined the library. Once your ticket has arrived you can borrow the full 14 items.
Join on the Internet:
You can join through the library catalogue. If you do this, you will initially be given a temporary number to use online. Simply bring this into the library and exchange it for your ELAN ticket.
To join on line, select the 'Online Library Catalogue' option from the 'Useful Websites' on the right hand side of this page. This will take you to the ELAN website where you can complete your registration.
Don't have an address?
We have special arrangements that allow homeless people to join the library and borrow items even though they don't have an address. Please ask at any library.
Items not on the catalogue?
Items not on our catalogue can be obtained by visiting your local branch. We are sorry but at this time we do not accept e-mail requests for items as there is a charge involved with obtaining items not held.
