Your Blue Food Waste Bin Needs You
Help keep your pipes clear
Keep your pipes clear
Food waste and fat which is disposed of down the drain can cause
blockages as it gets stuck together in your pipes. By following these
simple steps, this can easily be avoided and help to reduce bad smells
in the process too!
- Use your blue bin for food scraps and small amounts of cooled, solidified, cooking fat. This gives your food waste a new lease of life - instead of clogging up your drains, it is taken to a facility to produce either green energy or compost which is suitable for agricultural applications. For further information about these processes please see 'What happens to our recycling'
- Cooking oil can be sealed in a plastic bottle and taken to a Household Waste Recycling Centre and placed in the cooking oil bin. Used cooking oil can also be recycled in this way, ensuring that it is left to cool before pouring into a plastic bottle. The cooking oil collected at both sites is sent for recycling at a local facility.
- Use a sink strainer to help you catch those stray leftovers that
could clog your pipes. Simply empty them into the blue food waste bin.
