Sack Deliveries and Getting Additional Sacks
When will my sacks be delivered?
Every six months residents have a sack delivery where they are issued with:
-
3 rolls of 15 pink recycling sacks
-
1 roll of 6 clear textile recycling sacks
-
1 roll of 13 black refuse sacks
To find out when your next delivery of sacks is due, go to Where I live found on the right-hand side of this page in the useful websites section. Simply type in your postcode to find useful information regarding your local area.
If you are a new resident in the borough contact us using the details on the right to request a delivery of sacks and recycling and waste information.
Every household (except flats and multi-occupational properties - we are working on collections from these sites) should have a blue food waste bin. If you have not received a bin or yours has been lost/stolen or damaged then please let us know by using the online form on the right-hand side of this page.
The amount of waste collected at the kerbside in the black refuse sacks and taken to local landfill sites has fallen consistently for a number of years. Over the last 5 years it has fallen by over 18,200 tonnes, which is a lot of waste no longer taken to landfill sites and left to rot in the ground, releasing harmful greenhouse gases in the process.
As residents use the kerbside recycling services more and more, less emphasis needs to be placed on the black refuse sack collections, and resources can be re-directed elsewhere. As well as the pink recycling sack and clear textile recycling sack schemes, residents also have the benefit of food waste containers, providing a secure way of storing their food waste until collection day. In 2010-11 over 3,000 tonnes of food waste was sent for composting, and therefore diverted from landfill sites. This further reduces the dependency on black sacks.
Residents requiring additional black refuse sacks can purchase 'Southend issue' sacks from Cory Environmental Depot, Eastern Avenue (open Monday - Friday 6.30am to 6.00pm) or other brands from supermarkets and local retailers.
