Manhole Covers
Manhole Covers - overview
A manhole cover is a removable plate forming the lid over the opening of a manhole, to prevent someone from falling in and to keep unauthorised persons out.
Manhole covers are very heavy and are often made of cast iron, sometimes with infill's of concrete. They are heavy because the weight keeps them in place when traffic passes over them. This makes them inexpensive and strong. They usually feature 'pick poles', in which a hook handle is inserted to lift them. Specialised manhole hooks are manufactured for this purpose.
Manholes and drain covers in Southend are owned by us and other companies, e.g. Gas, Electricity, Water and Communication companies.
