Snow Clearance

The Council, in partnership with its contractor Cory Environmental, operates 5 road gritters to which snow ploughs can be fitted.

A local contractor maintains the Council's snow-blower. Other local contractors provide additional snow ploughs, lorries, mechanical shovels, etc. Rock Salt is applied to surfaces to melt frost and snow when agitated.

Rock Salt is salt crystals which naturally occur in 'marl' (a kind of clay) which is mined in Cheshire and Ireland. Grit (small stones) may be added to salt to provide better grip when continuous deep snow occurs, but grit is not often used.
