Planning your journey during the Winter months
Preparation is key
As a driver what precautions should I take during periods when temperatures are below 0 degrees centigrade (32 degrees fahrenheit)?
Leave plenty of time for your journey, do not hurry.
Drive with great care and reduce speed. Leave earlier so that plenty of time is available for your trip.
When driving on ice use low engine revs and a higher gear.- Do not make any sudden braking or accelerating motions.
- Frost can affect visibility through the windscreen, so ensure that heated air is directed towards the screen.
- Keep an ice scraper in the car.
- Ensure that your vehicle has been serviced for the winter, has effective windscreen wipers and washers, sufficient antifreeze, and tyres that are properly inflated and have correct depth of tread. It may be advisable to lower tyre pressure a little to increase traction.
- Before each journey, listen to local traffic or weather reports to see if a route you intend to use could be affected, consider if your journey is essential, clean and check lights, and clear windows and mirrors.
- Drive with great care, whether on treated or untreated roads, and be aware that a route may not be treated along its whole length.
- Keep a safe stopping distance between your vehicle and the one in front, keep speeds low, use dipped headlights in poor conditions, take special care of vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
As a pedestrian what precautions should i take during periods when temperatures are below 0 degrees centigrade (32 degrees fahrenheit)?
