Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Long Stay Immigration Inspections

This is a discretionary service for which the Council may make a charge

Long Stay Immigrants are sometimes required by letter by the High Commission in their country of origin to seek certain information prior to entering the country.

The list contains many items, one of which refers to housing standards and the possibility of overcrowding.

Upon production of a copy of such a letter, the Private Sector Housing team will consider whether it currently has the staff resources to carry out such an inspection and whether any charge might apply or whether the applicant should be guided to follow the advice in the letter to alternatively seek an inspection by a private surveyor.

Service

  1. Contact Private Sector Housing via 01702 215002 to confirm whether such an inspection service is currently being offered.
  2. Submit a copy of High Commission letter and list
  3. Private Sector Housing will contact nominated current occupier or landlord to arrange an inspection appointment.
  4. An inspection will be completed under the Housing Health & Safety Rating System under the Housing Act 2004 and the Overcrowding Standard within the Housing Act 1985.
  5. A summary report of the inspection will be sent to the nominated current occupier or landlord (so that this can be forwarded to the High Commission).
  6. Any deficiencies will be stated within the report and a reinspection will be made and a further report sent when such deficiencies have been remedied.
