We are working with community representatives to make sure we meet the goals for official accreditation as a Fairtrade Borough.
These are:
- To pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade (achieved May)
- The Council must support, promote and convene a Fairtrade Steering Group (August)
- At least two Fairtrade products should be available locally in shops and establishments (Completed survey due end of September)
- To promote Fairtrade principles (helped by the Steering Group. Directory of Fairtrade establishments due in December)
- Ensure Fairtrade products used at work and community organisations (December)
- Submit Fairtrade Borough application (January 2009 ready for Fairtrade Fortnight, March 2009)
The Fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label awarded by the Fairtrade Foundation which aims to ensure people in developing countries - who make goods sold in this country - get prices that fairly reward their work. This helps them work in better conditions and safer environments.
Fairtrade products are available in most supermarkets, shops etc and the Fairtrade logo is recognised by over 50% of the adult population. There are now over 380 Fairtrade Towns all over the country.
One of the objectives in the Council's Sustainable Procurement Policy, is to Purchase Fair-trade food and drink where practicable, seeking to achieve the status of becoming a Fair Trade town.
The Sustainable Procurement Policy recognises the positive impact that the Council can make on the environment and the economy, not only by how it spends public funds, but also the example it can set by taking a lead on such important issues.
