Recycling moves Southend schoolchildren to poetry.

Top poems about recycling clinched prizes for Southend schoolchildren, who will now see some of their winning words immortalised on posters.

The competition to devise the best poem about recycling proved popular with youngsters who battled for success.

The first prize poem, 'Recycle' by  Lucy Beelam, 11, won a £50 WH Smith voucher, and urged everyone to recycle using pink recycling sacks whenever possible.

The second and third prize winners received a £35 and £25 vouchers respectively for poems entitled 'Rubbish Poem' - emphasising how easy it is to recycle and 'Rubbish' - raising the issue of global warming.

Ten runners-up received Highly Commended certificates and WH Smith vouchers worth £10.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Ann Holland, presented winners and runners up with their awards at Bournes Green Junior School.

This Southend Festival competition was organised in conjunction with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Cory Environmental to help raise the borough's recycling rates.

The winning poems will feature on posters around the borough and boards at the town's Household Waste Recycling Centres in Stock Road and Leigh Marshes. Excerpts from the poems will also be used in ongoing recycling promotions by both Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Cory Environmental.

Councillor Tony Cox, Portfolio Holder for Public Protection & Waste, said: '"This competition has been a great way of engaging with our future generation on the issues of recycling and waste.

"The posters and promotions featuring the winning poems will raise awareness of recycling issues and help us to meet the Borough's recycling target of 60% by 2015 - which means 60% of the total waste collected in Southend must either be recycled or composted.

"With a current rate of 41%, getting the younger generation involved in initiatives such as this during key events such as Southend Festival 8 - is an important step in working towards achieving these targets."

Southend Festival 8 is the eighth annual cultural festival of its kind, organised by South Essex College and sponsored by Southend-on-Sea Town Centre Partnership, Renaissance Southend and Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. The festival celebrates the best creativity Southend has to offer.

The winning poems were:

Recycle - by Lucy Beelam, 11

Rubbish tips are all so dull, Only enjoyed by a Southend sea gull, Don't throw away without a thought, Always use pink bags as you ought!

Rubbish Poem - by Sacha Dobson, 10

Put your food waste in the blue bin, The pink sack should have paper, plastic and tin, In the white bag put clothing in, It's easy to do it bit by bit, Please, oh please, recycle it!

Rubbish - by Finley Wood, 11

Recycling is good, global warming is bad, If it carries on we'll all be sad, Don't let dump sites take over the earth, Recycle, recycle for all you are worth!
