Cabinet member for public protection, Councillor Mark Flewitt, will be joining a Veolia crew on Tuesday 3 July to experience a day in the working-life of a member of the waste team.

Cllr Flewitt, whose portfolio includes waste and street scene, is keen to gain a greater understanding of what a day working for the waste team entails, witness first-hand how they tackle challenges and identify potential areas for improvement.

Throughout the day, Cllr Flewitt will be shadowing two different crews; the residual/food waste team and the pink sack, paper and card team. This will enable Cllr Flewitt to see both sides of the day-to-day collections and how they work on the ground level.

Cllr Mark Flewitt, cabinet member for public protection, said: “I am really looking forward to getting to ground level and seeing first-hand how the hard work of our waste team makes a huge difference to Southend.

“I am eager to get stuck in and really educate myself further on the day-to-day role of the waste team.”
