You can now spend hours enjoying Southend seafront without worrying where to spend a penny - thanks to the new multi-accessible toilets at Chalkwell Esplanade.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has just opened the new facilities in a refurbished former public shelter at the end of Chalkwell Avenue .
In addition to four unisex cubicles, one male urinal and one disabled toilet, there is also a special 'changing places' toilet to further meets the needs of people with disabilities.
Meanwhile, new seating has been installed outside so the building can still be used as a shelter.
The £185,000 facilities were built in partnership with Danfo, the company which is delivering new toilets as part of the Council's ongoing plan to improve the borough's public conveniences.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Waste, Councillor Tony Cox, said: "These excellent facilities at Chalkwell Esplanade - which will be fully operational in time for the peak summer season - mean that families can linger on the beach without concerns about getting caught short.
"We are particularly pleased that the toilets include specially designed cubicles suitable for those with different types of disability. We want to make Southend as welcoming as we can for everyone."
Kelly George of the organisation Family Voice, which represents children with disabilities, said: "I think it's fantastic and it's definitely the way forward to help people with disabilities."
Laura Clarke , Aiming High Commissioner for Children with Disabilities, said: "This means that families can come out for a day on the seafront, and, if they have a disabled child or adult, they will be able to keep them comfortable all day.
"We are working very hard to make Southend accessible to all, so it is essential to make sure we cater for the more complex needs of those with disabilities.
"The special 'changing places' toilet will only be available to those eligible to use it. Contact the Council's Customer Service Centre on 01702-215000 for details."
