Those venturing to the end of Southend Pier can soon immortalise their trip by signing a special visitor’s book.
Inspired former Southender, Brian Mendes, 79, now living in
Mr Mendes briefly revisited his Southend roots this September and met up with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council Officer,
During their meeting, Mr Mendes suggested presenting the town with a visitor's book which ex-pats like himself - or anyone else - could sign and leave messages in.
This will be kept at the RNLI Gift Shop run by Dave and Ruth Burgess at the sea end of Southend Pier. The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Ann Holland will unveil the book there at 1pm on Thursday 18th November, and will sign the first page.
Councillor Holland says: "This 'Sarfend Visitor's Book' is a wonderful suggestion from Brian. Everyone who signs it will have a certificate as a memento.
"It is also unique because people who visit Southend websites, and who then come to the town in person, can now seek out the book and leave their mark. "Their comments and signatures will be recorded online, on http://www.southendtimeline.com/, and they can then continue their chat on the websites too.
"So many people have a huge affection for Southend that we very much look forward to reading their comments about our town.
"It will be available for residents and visitors to sign. For those who have not yet been in person to see Southend, the book adds another element to their visit, and gives yet another terrific reason to explore our world famous Pier!"
Mr Mendes says: "I'm delighted this idea has taken off, as I'm sure there are very many people who would like to express in words, how much Southend means to them.
"Southend has very special place in my heart, and I thoroughly enjoyed coming back to the town recently. It is exciting to see all the improvements under way."
The cover of the book was created by local artist Madelaine Murphy through the arts project, TAP http://www.artistsmeet.co.uk/.
