Cuckoo Corner – lane closures for utility works

Published Monday 12th April 10 in Roads - road-works news

Off-peak lane closures will take place in Manners Way on two days this week to enable public utility works in advance of the Cuckoo Corner Junction Improvement scheme.

The work is being carried out during the Easter break to reduce disruption to traffic flows and reduce the duration of the works in the long run.

On Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th April a single lane of Manners Way will be closed between 9.30am and 3.30pm to allow EDF and Virgin Media to lay ducts north of the zebra crossing.

The works will be carried out in stages to allow for continual two-way traffic flow to keep disruption to a minimum.

National Grid Gas and Cable & Wireless commenced work this week on relocating ducts within the north footway on Prince Avenue and Priory Crescent .

These works have not required lane closures, however access to the footways will be interrupted during the works.

These works are also taking place off-peak between 9.30am and 3.30pm and will be carried out within a lane closure for safety reasons.

They will then continue along Prince Avenue , finishing in the vicinity of 50 Prince Avenue. These works will also be carried out within a lane closure during off-peak traffic flows.

The £5m Cuckoo Corner scheme will improve the flow of traffic at one of the town's worst bottlenecks, saving 400 hours a day on existing journey times in the process.

Widening work is due to commence in June and will reduce congestion and enable traffic to flow more efficiently at peak times.

More lanes will be added to the existing roundabout and state-of-the-art traffic signal technology will be installed to keep commuters on the move.

New cycle and pedestrian crossings are also being installed and the new junction area will be attractively landscaped.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council apologises to local residents for any inconvenience the works may cause.

From Wednesday 14th April BT are relocating ducts within the west footway on Victoria Avenue between Earls Hall Avenue and Earls Hall Parade.
