Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Have your say on the future of transport in Southend

Published Wednesday 22nd December 10 in Council - news and information releases news

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is currently considering proposals for the future of transport in the borough – and YOUR views count.

Residents are being asked for their feedback on issues such as the borough's bus, train, air and road infrastructure, congestion, parking, footway maintenance and road safety.

They will also be invited to respond to a series of "policy statements" by prioritising how the Council can implement and take forward a series of proposed "actions".

The consultation will include a new focus on sustainable transport and the need to tackle health problems through the promotion of more "active travel".

It will also ask residents for their opinions on how the Council can improve traffic management, make public transport more efficient and communicate better.

The consultation places a strong emphasis on developing effective partnerships and working alongside the community to provide real and lasting solutions.

Greater accountability for its actions and increased co-operation with the organisations the Council depends upon for its transport services will be the key to achieving this aim.

Councillor Mark Flewitt, Executive Councillor for Planning and Transport, urged residents to take part in the consultation.

He said: "We realise uncertain times lie ahead during this period of change and budget constraint.

"But at the same time it is essential to review and update policies and plans so that we can identify where transport systems can help deliver better, sustained economic growth and recovery and improve the environment whilst reducing energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions.

"I would ask that as many people as possible respond to this consultation to help us in shaping the borough's transport services for the future.

"We must work towards achieving an infrastructure that understands and responds to the needs of the people of the Borough, helping them to travel to where they want to go in the most appropriate way."

The consultation runs until Friday 14th anuary, 2011, and can be found online at www.southend.gov.uk/ltp3
