Southend-on-Sea Borough Council regrets to inform residents and visitors to the town that the Pier will be closed to members of the public from Christmas Eve.
This is due to maintenance issues which have been compounded as a result of the extreme weather conditions experienced during recent weeks.
The Pier will remain closed over the Christmas Bank Holiday period to enable contractors to access the structure and carry out emergency remedial works.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Deputy Leader, Councillor John Lamb, said: "Unfortunately the recent snow, ice and freezing temperatures have hit the Pier hard.
"Due to the extreme weather we have been experiencing recently a number of health and safety works now have to be carried out as a matter of urgency.
"Whilst this is extremely regrettable, especially at this time of year, the Council has a duty of care to all Pier users.
"I would like to apologise to anyone inconvenienced by this temporary closure and assure residents and visitors that the Pier will be reopened to the public as soon as practicably possible."
The Pier Visitor and Information Centre will be closed on Christmas Day but will remain open throughout the rest of the holiday period.
