School says head will be sadly missed.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is sad to announce the death of Philip Rodbard, Head Teacher of Lancaster School in Westcliff-on-Sea, who passed away on 6th January, 2011, after a short illness.

Mr Rodbard, 58, was a thoroughly respected head who had successfully steered the school, a designated Special School for students aged 14 to 19 with a range of complex needs, through the Southend Education Special Needs Review.

Under his leadership it was making steady progress towards its aims of improving the education of its students and preparing them for their role in society, as reflected in two successful recent OFSTED inspections.

Deputy Head Teacher Rachel Dennis said: "Philip's vision was that the students at Lancaster School should develop skills for life.

"Philip played a leading role in establishing the Westcliff Centre for the further education of young people aged between 19 and 25 with severe learning disabilities.

"He was also instrumental in the development of the wonderful swimming pool and therapy suite which opened in March 2010 and various therapy and special needs groups.

"Philip was also active on a number of education-based committees, including the Southend Schools Forum, Southend Education Trust and the Extended Schools Hub.

"His contribution to the life of Lancaster School was celebrated by the students and staff at a Special Assembly last week.

"Philip was a private family man who will be sadly missed by his wife Minerva, his children and grandchildren, as well as the staff, students, parents and governors of the school."

Mr Rodbard's funeral will take place at Basildon Crematorium on Monday 17th January at 4.30pm. Donations can be made to either Cancer Research or Fair Havens Hospice.
