Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Progress Road works

Published Wednesday 19th January 11 in Council - news and information releases news

Work on the Progress Road junction improvement is entering the final stages and the scheme is set to complete on schedule in March.

The bulk of the construction works were completed before the New Year, with resurfacing work taking place before and after Christmas on the A127, Progress Road and The Fairway.

Installation of new traffic signal technology commenced last week in conjunction with the traffic signal contractor PEEK.

Signals and control boxes are in place and cables are being laid to allow the signals to talk to each other once they are up and running.

Work started this week to install sensor 'loops' in the carriageway which has necessitated lane and full road closures on the A127, Progress Road and The Fairway.

These 'loops' will detect vehicles on the approach to the signals and help keep traffic moving once the junction is fully reopened.

The closures have been scheduled to take place overnight when traffic is at its lightest in order to protect the workforce on site.

Work taking place on The Fairway has been scheduled to finish at 9pm to minimise noise disruption to residents.

The following closures will take place this week:

Thursday 20th January 2011: Overnight between 8pm and 5am work will take place on the A127 EASTBOUND between Rayleigh Weir Underpass and Progress Road . A FULL ROAD CLOSURE will be implemented with a diversion route in place via Eastwood and Rayleigh Road .

Friday 21st January 2011: Overnight between 8pm and 5am work will take place on the A127 EASTBOUND between Progress Road and Bellhouse Lane . A FULL ROAD CLOSURE will be implemented with a diversion route in place via Rayleigh Road , with traffic re-joining at Kent Elms Corner.

This work will be done in consecutive phases. Phase 1 of this work will mean road users are not able to turn left from Progress Road onto the eastbound A127, phase 2 will mean road users are not able to turn left from Progress Road into The Fairway (traffic should use Bellhouse Lane) and phase 3 will prevent road users from turning right from Progress Road onto the westbound A127.

Care should be taken when driving through these road works. Road users should refer to signage on site for more information.

Speed limits will be put in place for your safety as well as to protect the workforce on site and we urge everyone to respect them.

The new traffic signals will be commissioned in the next few weeks. There will be a period where they are adjusted to ensure the junction is working to its best capacity.

Landscaping works will take place in February and March once Birse and PEEK have finished on site.

The hatched yellow box junction markings removed from The Fairway's junction with Eastwood Old Road will be in place in forthcoming weeks.

The Council is aware that this has led to some disruption (through cars blocking Eastwood Old Road) and appreciates your patience whilst waiting for the box to be installed.
