Pre-school gym sessions for youngsters have proved so popular that a new series is due to get underway at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre.

The classes introduce pre-school children to gym-based activities to help develop balance, coordination, agility and confidence using fun exercises and equipment in a safe controlled area.

Sessions are structured to allow youngsters to progress through a development programme catering for all ages from pre-school up to 18. Coaches are qualified and CRB checked and follow national governing body guidelines.

Tots gym courses run from 1.20pm till 2.30pm on Wednesdays and from 1pm till 2pm on Thursdays and Fridays, and school age courses run from 4pm till 7pm on Fridays and 9am till 2pm on Saturdays. They cost £26.10 for a six-week course (£4.35 per session).

The centre, at Garon Park , off Eastern Avenue , Southend, also hosts popular Tots Tennis sessions. These teach simple tennis skills on a mini-court with sponge balls and mini rackets and help to develop hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, throwing and catching ability.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture, Councillor Derek Jarvis, said: "These classes are a marvellous opportunity to help youngsters gain confidence and develop the skills needed for a whole range of activities while having lots of fun too."
