Join Southend’s young voices

Southend Boys' Choir and Southend Girls' Choirs are encouraging new recruits to join them for their busy season of concerts this summer and beyond.

The Boys Choir rehearses on Friday afternoons at Southend High Schools for Boys, Prittlewell Chase, Southend, and the Girls Choir rehearses on Wednesday afternoons at Southend High School for Girls in Southchurch Boulevard , Southend.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council supports the choirs which perform locally as well as at prestigious London venues and abroad.

The Council's Corporate Director for Adult and Community Services, Simon Leftley says: "These tremendous Choirs offer free training to young singers and give them the opportunity to take part in a huge range of exciting concerts in wonderful venues in Britain and throughout the world.

"Every year they entertain hundreds of thousands of people, raise a great deal of money for different charities, and they have also made some terrific recordings. The Choirs are excellent ambassadors for the town.

"New members would be able to take part in the summer concerts. Children and young people from eight years old upwards are eligible to join the Choirs.

"Also, we urge anyone who has not yet seen the Choirs in action to come along to one of their concerts to experience thoroughly enjoyable entertainment."

Forthcoming engagements for Southend Boys' and Girls' Choirs include:  

• Sunday 25th April, 11am - St John's Church , Pier Hill, Southend. St George's Day Service
• Saturday 1st May, 3pm - Southwold Parish Church , Southwold, Suffolk . Concert for Church funds. Free Admission .There will be a coach for audience members from Southend to Southwold - contact 01702 303628 to book coach seats.
• Saturday 3rd July, 7.30pm - Plaza Centre, Southchurch Road , Southend. Southend Girls' Choir, Southend, with Southend Choral Society "A Night at the Opera"
• Friday 9th July, 8pm - Holy Trinity Church , Southchurch Boulevard , Southend. Southend Boys' Choir Summer Concert
• Monday 12th July, 1pm - St Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square , London . Southend Girls' Choir - Lunchtime Recital
• Friday 16th July, 8pm St Saviour's Church, Kings Road , Westcliff  Joint Choir Concert to raise funds for Fairhaven's Hospice.
• Monday 26th July - Sunday 8th August Summer Tour to California .Concerts in San Diego , Los Angeles and San Francisco .
