City Beach throws light on Southend seafront

City Beach lights illuminate the seafront.

Evening visitors to Southend will now be wowed by a spectacular light show of funky neon colours when they stroll along the town’s famous seafront.

Six 80ft-high lighting columns have been installed along the resort's Marine Parade as part of the £7m City Beach regeneration scheme.

The scheme is one of four major infrastructure projects that have been undertaken by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council as part of the massive £25 million Better Southend initiative.

The digital lighting columns will act as the centre piece of City Beach , hopefully encouraging more visitors and getting them to stay longer into the evenings and later into the year.

They were officially switched on by The Worshipful The Mayor of Southend, Councillor Ann Holland, on Friday 18th March.

The switch-on ceremony was attended by special guest Sir Bob Kerslake MP, the Permanent Secretary for Communities and Local Government.

Work on the scheme, which has been funded by the Homes and Communities Agency, is on course to complete on schedule and within budget by March 31st.

When finished it will also feature a new landscaped area complete with a refreshing fountain. There will also be improved access to the beach as well as new footpaths and cycle facilities.

Mariners Square is the last large area of construction work awaiting completion. This includes work on the jets for the new fountain, paving areas in the family friendly area of the square and new steps.
