Local elections - Tories retain control in Southend

The Conservatives have retained control of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council following Thursday’s local elections.
The Council retires in thirds. There are 17 wards and one councillor was up for election in each ward.
Councillor Dr Jason Luty (Con) retired in Eastwood Park ward, Councillor Pat Rayner retired in Shoeburyness and Councillor Stephen George (Lab) retired in Kursaal.
The Conservatives gained seats in the St Laurence and Blenheim Park wards but lost in Shoeburyness and St Luke's. They remain in overall control of the authority with 28 seats.
Gains in Shoeburyness and St Luke's enabled the Independents to increase their share of the Council to nine seats.
The Liberal Democrats are down to 10 seats after losing in St Laurence and Blenheim Park . Labour stayed on four seats.
The turnout for this year's election was 38.19 per cent.
