New Mayor for Southend

A new Mayor of Southend was elected at the town's traditional Mayor-Making ceremony on Thursday afternoon.
Hundreds of council officials, residents, family members and friends attended Southend's Civic Centre to witness the official inauguration of Councillor Ann Holland.
Cllr Holland, who was appointed Deputy Mayor in 2009, takes over as first citizen of the Borough from Brian Smith.
She has represented Southchurch Ward since 1996, held the Environment & Public Protection Portfolio from 2000-2005 and the Culture, Sport and Amenities Portfolio from 2005-2007.
Cllr Holland will be assisted in her Mayoral duties by her Escort David Johnson, Chief Fire Officer of Essex County Fire & Rescue Service, and nine other senior fire officers.
She has worked with Mr Johnson for a number of years in her role as Vice Chair of the Essex Fire Authority.
Cllr Holland, the town's 91st Mayor, said: "I feel very honoured and privileged to have been elected as Mayor of Southend.
"During my year in office I will be supporting the Southend Stroke Club, Southend Arts Council and The Village (Disability) as my chosen charities.
"I cannot speak highly enough of the work carried out by these excellent charities in the community.
"There will be many events to look forward to over this coming year, not least the homecoming parade by The 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment on June 17.
"I look forward to meeting as many people as possible and will do my best to promote the whole of the borough.
"Canon Michael Ballard from Holy Trinity Church in Southchurch has kindly agreed to be my chaplain."
Councillor David Norman has been appointed as Deputy Mayor for 2010/11, with his wife Jane appointed Deputy Mayoress.
