Fancy shaking some pom poms? Well now’s your chance because a series of cheerleading classes have just been launched at three of Southend’s leisure centres.
Cheerleading is a fun physical activity - and sometimes a competitive sport - based on organised routines that usually range from one to three minutes in duration.
These new and exciting sessions will teach participants the core techniques of cheerleading including tumbling, dancing, jumping and cheering.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Derek Jarvis, said: "Cheerleading originated in the United States and is a hugely popular activity over there.
"It has grown significantly in this country in the past five years and these classes are an excellent opportunity for children and young people to experience this fun and diverse activity, taught by our fully qualified cheerleading coach.
"These sessions, aimed mainly at beginners, are part of the Sway Dance brand from Parkwood Community Leisure, the company which manages the Council's leisure centres.
"As the programme develops, we hope to introduce more intermediate and advanced classes."
The 45-minute sessions for five to nine-year-olds cost £3.50 and hour-long sessions for 10 to 14-year-olds cost £4. Advantage card rates are not applicable.
