Turf-cutting marks start of Hinguar School redevelopment.

Wielding a specially engraved spade, pupils from Hinguar School joined the Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor David Norman, to help dig the first foundations for their new primary school.

The children were taking part in an official turf-cutting event for the new school in New Garrison Road, Gunners Park, Shoebury, along with representatives of the contractor Kier Eastern, teachers and councillors.

One pupil from each year group was invited to attend this ceremony after a Kier employee dressed as Bob the Builder picked their winning names out of a hard hat.

The new school will be a contemporary design with modern learning facilities. It will be a one-form entry primary school with a nursery, swimming pool, and external playing areas including a junior sports pitch.

The school will be able to zone off areas of the new building which can be opened to the community after school or in the holidays.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Children and Learning, Councillor Mark Flewitt, said: "The new school is very much-needed, so the ceremony was a really exciting landmark.

"Those connected with Hinguar School have been very much involved in the project, along with officers from the Council, Space Craft Architects and the design team.

"We hope the new school will be completed at the end of next May, with the moving in process taking place over the summer ready for teaching to begin in the new facility for the new academic year in September 2012."
