Airport runway extension - legal costs

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council can confirm that it has incurred costs of £56,927.12p (excluding VAT) in defending Judicial Review proceedings brought by members of Stop Airport Extension Now (SAEN).
The costs were incurred in relation to the Southend Airport runway extension.
The Council has decided to make this sum of money public as a result of previous media enquiries relating to the cost of SAEN's court actions.
The sum does not include the cost in officer hours incurred by the authority in contesting the proceedings, which both the High Court and the Court of Appeal found to be unarguable.
It is worth noting that SAEN's original action, brought in the name of Millard, was also funded by the public purse through the Legal Aid system.
