Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is flying the rainbow flag to demonstrate its support for the Essex Pride festival celebrating diversity

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is clearly demonstrating its backing for the forthcoming Essex Pride festival to celebrate diversity in Essex.

This event takes place on Sunday 4th September in Central Park, Chelmsford from midday until 11pm

The Council is hosting a stand there - thanks to a £300 donation from the LGBT Staff Forum, to showcase the Council's work on equality and cohesion in support of Southend's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

In previous years Essex Pride has attracted more than 3,000 people from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community from across Essex and beyond.

A number of the Council's partners such as Essex Police, South Essex Homes, Essex Fire and Rescue and other local authorities are also helping sponsor the event.

In addition the Council will be flying the LGBT 'Rainbow' Flag at the Civic Centre from Friday 26th August to Monday 5th September 2011.

This, together with the community football event - Southenders v London Titans - which took place earlier in the year to mark "kick homophobia out of football" campaign, underlines the Council's continuing commitment that prejudice will not be tolerated.

It sends a clear message that the Council values the contribution and diversity of all of its residents - helping to create a respectful and vibrant Southend.

Essex Pride will also feature a number of Southend businesses as well as food stalls and fairground rides present on the day with plenty fun activities for children, including face painting.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Leader, Councillor Nigel Holdcroft said "In Southend we are determined to ensure that all members of our diverse community have the opportunity to contribute their talents to the town as well as accessing our services when needed. The Council is delighted to support Essex Pride."

Unison is providing a coach to Essex Pride in Chelmsford. It will leave from Southend Victoria Station at midday on Sunday 4th September
