Schoolchildren who won the Big Picture contest by submitting their photos of local green spaces, are being presented with prizes

School pupils are about to receive their prizes for winning a Euro-backed photo contest to take pictures of Southend and Rochford green spaces.

The winners will be presented with top Olympus digital cameras at a ceremony at Saxon Hall, Aviation Way on Thursday 15th September, attended by representatives of those behind this Big Picture initiative.

These include Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, (RSPB) the Rotterdam Water Board, the Flemish Land Agency, and Rochford District Council.

Olympus Cameras sponsored the contest in south-east Essex, for young people up to 18 years old.

Launched in the Netherlands and Belgium, this competition is part of an EU-funded partnership to foster an appreciation of all our green spaces, particularly those in Urban Habitats, close to towns and cities.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Derek Jarvis said: "Congratulations to all the participants on their marvellous photos of open spaces, plants and wildlife in Southend and Rochford.

Entries can be seen on http://www.urbanhabitats.co.uk/, and the winning pictures will be included in future exhibitions.

"Our green spaces are vital to the health and wellbeing of residents and visitors. We aim ultimately to link up Southend's green spaces with open countryside to the north of the town to form The Three Rivers Trail for walkers, cyclists and all the family to enjoy."
