Southend has just won a silver award in the Anglia in Bloom contest

Flourishing Southend has just scooped silver in the Anglia in Bloom Awards.

Against hot competition, Southend was awarded the trophy after two judges scrutinised the town to assess all aspects, including parks, street cleaning and recycling.

The judges were also very interested in how the community was involved in supporting the town.

Their tour began at St John's Church in central Southend, and they went on to visit:

  • Warrior Square
  • Cuckoo Corner
  • Huntingdon Society Allotment at Manners Way allotments
  • Temple Sutton School,
  • Thorpe Bay
  • South Shoebury Hall
  • Shoebury 'Old Ranges' Wildlife Reserve & Gunners Park
  • The Esplanade
  • City Beach
  • Prittlewell Square
  • Porters - Southend Mayor's residence

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Derek Jarvis said: "This excellent award is the result of the team efforts of the whole community.

"The judges recognised the amount of regeneration in Southend, and noted that we had gained five Blue flags for our beaches and four Green flags.

"They also saw enthusiastic work being carried out at Temple Sutton School and the involvement of other schools too.

"We look forward to continuing to build on this terrific achievement. We also welcome input from other sections of the community, including businesses, who might like to become further involved in helping to keep Southend blooming."
