Southend Beach Hut owners have entered a contest to find the best exterior, interior and name of their beach huts

Time to celebrate Southend’s brilliant beach huts!

Members of Southend Beach Hut Owners Association have entered a special new competition to find the beach hut with the best exterior, best interior and the best name.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council's Executive Councillor for Culture and Tourism Councillor Derek Jarvis is joining a panel of judges which also includes former Southend Mayor Ron Price and Mr Arthur Westney, to pick the winners tomorrow, Friday 30th September.

He said: "Southend's beach huts are very much-loved and attractive feature of our seafront.

"This contest has evidently created a lot of interest among beach hut owners, so I very much look forward to helping judge the entries, although I feel sure it will be very hard to choose between them."

Social Secretary of Southend Beach Hut Owners Association, Gwenda Syratt said: "When people entered the competition, I asked them to write a short piece about what their beach hut meant to them, and there have been some very interesting replies.

"Many of the owners have had beach huts in their families for generations."
